Peer Support Specialists have lived experience as recipients of mental health services. As integrated team members, they bring valuable personal insight to recovery and mental health services.

 

The role of the Peer Specialist includes, but is not limited to, these duties:

  • Provides supportive services through a peer lens, including empowerment, self-help education, and advocacy.
  • Facilitates community integration through activities using a strengths-based, client-centred approach.
  • Accompanies clients on community outings, including appointments, shopping, or other activities.
  • Supports clients in self-management by sharing lived experience, practical problem-solving, and linkages with peer supports and advocacy groups.
  • Promotes a culture of respect for clients’ points of view and integrates these into treatment and rehabilitation plans.
