The Social Worker role may also include titles such as Designated Allied Social Worker (DASW) or Social Program Officer (SPO). Social workers provide expertise in advocacy, social functioning, family structures, and relationships. They often lead engagement with family members or natural supports in treatment and service planning.

 

The role of the Social Worker includes, but is not limited to, these duties:

  • Provides counselling, resources, and support to participants, family members, and community members, including referrals to other agencies.
  • Contributes to holistic, team-based care planning through assessments, including comprehensive mental status exams utilizing harm reduction, biopsychosocial, and trauma-informed frameworks.
  • Connects clients with social services, community agencies, and support organizations aligned with their individual goals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act (MHA), Adult Guardianship Act (AGA), and Health Care Consent and Care Facility Act (HCCFA).
  • Advocates for accountability and systemic improvements to policies and funding structures.
